Stifatho (beef with onions)


  • Ingredients
  • 2 lb. of boneless chuck
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic
  • 2 bay leaves, Salt and pepper
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil, 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 2 Tbsp. vinegar,
  • 4 lb. small white onions
  • 4 oz. dry red wine
  • 2 Tbsp. tomato sauce (optional)



  • Directions
  • Cut meat into 1-1 1/2" cubes.
  • Mince garlic.
  • Melt butter in Dutch oven, then add oil.
  • Brown meat.
  • Add remaining ingredients.
  • Add enough water to cover half of contents.
  • Cover and simmer for 1 1/2 hours until meat is tender.
  • Serve on rice.
